A clean, hollow ledge shelf that mounts to wall studs. It is a level 1 project, built from two boards, and a good first build: five parts, straight 90 degree cuts, and about 1.5 to 2 hours for a first build.

Letter edition (print) Phone editionWhat is in the plan
- Size: 36 in wide, 7 1/4 in deep, 4 1/4 in tall (914 x 184 x 108 mm).
- A shopping list by board length and a cutting diagram, so you buy once and waste little.
- Dimensioned drawings and an exploded view with lettered parts.
- Step-by-step assembly with a 3D view of every step.
- A Square Check: the exact diagonal to measure so the box comes out square.
- Cut tags and a maker’s label to print.
What you need
- Wood: pine, fir or poplar, indoor use. Two boards to buy.
- Hardware: 18 wood screws #8 x 1 5/8 in, 4 screws 3 in for the studs, and wood glue.
- Tools: a saw, drill/driver with a pilot-hole bit, tape measure, speed square, level and pencil, a stud finder and sandpaper.
Safety: this is a decorative shelf for light loads. It is not rated or tested for heavy books or tools. Always screw into wall studs, and check for wires and pipes before drilling. Our plans are modeled and checked in 3D and have not yet been built and tested, so dry-fit your parts before you drive screws.
