Shoe rack dimensions: depth, spacing and how many pairs fit
Short answer

A shelf 10 to 12 in deep holds one row of shoes. Leave about 5 to 6 in of height for sneakers and flats, 7 to 9 in for dress shoes and low boots, and 12 in or more for tall boots.

A shoe rack looks simple, but a few inches change how well it works: too shallow and shoes hang off the front, too tight and boots do not fit. Here are the sizes that work for most households, and how to plan the shelves for your own shoes.

Standard shoe rack dimensions

DimensionTypical sizeIn mm
Shelf depth (one row of shoes)10 to 12 in255 to 305 mm
Space for sneakers and flats5 to 6 in125 to 150 mm
Space for dress shoes and low boots7 to 9 in180 to 230 mm
Space for tall boots12 in or more305 mm or more
Width per pairabout 4 to 5 in100 to 125 mm

These are approximate. Shoe sizes vary, so measure your longest and tallest pairs and add about an inch.

How many pairs fit on a shelf?

Divide the usable width of the shelf by about 4 to 5 in per pair. A 30 in shelf holds roughly six or seven pairs of everyday shoes side by side. Slatted shelves let dirt and water fall through, which keeps wet shoes from sitting in a puddle.

One row or two?

A single row of shoes needs a depth of about 10 to 12 in. If you want to store two rows front to back you need roughly double that, but the back row gets hard to reach. Most people find a shallow rack with more levels more useful than a deep one.

Choosing the height

  1. Decide what you will store on each level: sneakers, dress shoes, boots.
  2. Add the shoe height to about an inch of clearance to get the opening for that level.
  3. Add the thickness of the shelves and the base. A 3/4 in board is 3/4 in thick in real size (see the lumber chart).
  4. Check the total against the space by the door, and keep it low enough to sit a bag on top if you want to.

A two-tier rack with the numbers worked out

Our Two-Tier Shoe Rack (plan PS-03) is 30 in wide, 12 in deep and 16 in tall (762 x 305 x 406 mm), made from pine or fir 2x2 legs and 1x3 slats. The plan gives the shopping list, a cutting diagram and the Square Checks. See the Two-Tier Shoe Rack plan page. Our plans are modeled and checked in 3D and have not yet been built and tested.

Frequently asked questions

How deep should a shoe rack be?

About 10 to 12 inches deep for one row of shoes.

How much space do I need between shoe rack shelves?

Roughly 5 to 6 inches for sneakers and flats, 7 to 9 inches for dress shoes and low boots, and 12 inches or more for tall boots.

How many pairs of shoes fit on a 30 inch shelf?

About six or seven pairs of everyday shoes side by side, at roughly 4 to 5 inches per pair.

Are slatted shelves better for a shoe rack?

Slats let dirt and water fall through, which helps wet shoes dry and keeps the shelf cleaner.
